Becky Mullvain Named Next Associate Principal at Islander Middle School
Mercer Island, WA, June 17, 2024 – The Mercer Island School District is pleased to announce Becky Mullvain has been selected as the next associate principal at Islander Middle School (IMS). Mullvain replaces Weston Lucas who has accepted a Learning Services Coordinator role with the district.
“It is an honor to be appointed the next associate principal at Islander Middle School,” said Mullvain. “I am excited to be returning to Mercer Island. In many ways I feel as if I am coming home. Not only did I begin my career with the Mercer Island School District, but I lived at the north end of the island before I was married.”
“As a child I also spent a significant amount of time at the southern end of the island where my grandparents lived and where my dad, uncles, and aunt grew up. Mercer Island is an amazing community. I look forward to supporting students, partnering with families, and adding to the wonderful work already underway at Islander Middle School.”
Mullvain has been an assistant principal at Issaquah Middle School for the last five years but has a long history with IMS. Mullvain was an instructional coach at IMS from 2013-2019. During the 2018-19 school year she was also an administrative intern at the school. From 2007-2013 Mullvain taught eight grade language arts, eighth grade social studies, and seventh and eighth grade ASB-Leadership. She created the eighth grade Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) Leadership program at IMS. She was instrumental in bringing the Character Strong social emotional learning curriculum to IMS for the WEB Leader class and later spreading the Character Strong curriculum to other grades.
“We are thrilled to have Becky returning to our school,” said IMS co-principal MaryJo Budzius. “The interview team was overwhelmed with positives when describing their interview experience with Becky. We saw strengths in her familiarity with our school and the fact she is currently an assistant principal.”
“Becky is a role model as a learner, an out of the box thinker, is driven and inspirational and has a depth of knowledge and experience regarding special education, universal design for learning (UDL) and grading for equity (G4E),” continued Budzius.
Mullvain graduated from Washington State University (WSU) in 2004 with a BA in History. She received her Masters of Education in 2007 from WSU. She holds a Washington Professional Teaching Certificate with endorsements in history, social studies, and language arts. Mullvain obtained a Teacher Leader Certificate from University of Washington in June 2014 a Washington Principal Certificate from Western Governors University in May of 2019.
