IMS 8th Grade Orchestra Invited To National Orchestra Festival

Mercer Island, WA, August 26, 2026 – The Mercer Island School District is pleased to announce the Islander Middle School 8^th grade orchestra has been selected to participate in the 2027 National Orchestra Festival (NOF) presented by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). 

The festival takes place from February 24 to February 27 in Chicago, Illinois, at the McCormick Place.

An invitation to participate in the National Orchestra Festival is a distinguished honor that showcases outstanding music programs under the direction of ASTA members.

“This invitation is a tremendous honor for our students and a reflection of the dedication, growth, and passion they bring to orchestra every day,” said IMS orchestra teacher Sarah Hart. “Performing at the National Orchestra Festival will give our students an incredible opportunity to share their music with other outstanding young musicians from across the country, learn from renowned educators and clinicians, and experience the power of music on a national stage. I am incredibly proud of this ensemble and excited to see them represent IMS, MISD, and Mercer Island in Chicago.”

To be selected, the IMS orchestra participated in a highly competitive adjudicated process. Ensembles from across the country submitted performance entries through a blind, peer-review process to earn an invitation.

Held annually in conjunction with the ASTA National Conference, the event features ensembles performing live for respected adjudicators and participating in workshops with renowned clinicians. In addition to participating in NOF, the IMS ensemble can immerse itself in all that the National Conference offers, including sessions, master classes, concerts, exhibits, and networking opportunities.
