Monday, April 22, 2024 – Islander Middle School eighth graders Alice Liang and Kavya Muralidhar and IMS language arts teacher Taylor Gall will be guests on a segment of Studio 13 Live on Wednesday, April 24. Studio 13 Live is on FOX 13 Seattle from 10-11am.

Both Liang and Muralidhar recently won Honorable Mention Awards in the New York Times How To Writing Contest for Teenagers. Liang’s award winning submission is titled How To Survive Middle School Hallways and Muralidhar’s award winning submission is titled How To Play Out of Tune On the Flute.

Studio 13 Live hosts Carly Henderson and Mireya Garcia will be highlighting the awards won by both students and speaking to them about how they came up with the ideas for their How To pieces. Studio 13 Live is a fun and engaging show so we have provided the show video of Liang navigating the hallways at IMS and Muralidhar will be performing on the flute during the segment.

The hosts will speak to Gall about how and why the IMS eighth grade language arts team incorporated the How To Writing contest into their curriculum.

We encourage community members to tune into the show to see the IMS trio or record the show for later viewing. After the broadcast we will have a link to the show segment on our website.

The MISD Instagram will be chronicling the trio’s appearance on Studio 13 Live with behind-the-scenes Stories posts.

We are very appreciative of the opportunity Studio 13 Live is providing MISD to broadcast student voice, celebrate student successes, and feature our innovative teachers.
